A bit of history...

Built in 1809, just four years after the construction of Tralee's first Georgian terrace, Day Place, the row of houses we find ourselves in would originally have faced out onto the banks of the Abhainn Mór, or Big River. The river was culverted in the early 19th century and many people walking along Prince's Street (or 'Quay') these days are quite unaware what still flows under their feet!

Little is known (yet) about who the original inhabitants were, but given the style of building it is likely that there house was home to a professional family. What is now our basement bar would have been the kitchen and scullery, with the doorway into our party room having led out into a courtyard.
The kitchen started out as the building's stables!

Looking at the various maps and documents we've managed to get out hands on, we can tell that the river had been covered over by the 1840s, by which time the railway out to Dingle (with a station more or less where the ESB buildings are now) and the canal had been built.

130 or so years later - by 1893 - things looked very different!

A map from 1756 showing a much smaller Tralee, with the river still flowing past where No 14 now stands. No Dominican Church (1866-1871) or Day Place (1795-1805) either.
One very useful source of information on the area is "Memories of Old Tralee by Miss A.M Rowan.
Imagine our surprise then at discovering she used to live at No 14!
